Charles Leclerc Secures Pole Position at Hungarian Grand Prix
Charles Leclerc has taken pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix after a stunning performance in qualifying on Saturday. His dominance over the competition was unexpected, especially given that just 48 hours earlier, the Monegasque driver had described the Hungaroring circuit in Mogyorod as his "worst track of the season."
Leclerc has faced challenges at the Hungaroring in previous years, never finishing higher than fourth in the Hungarian Grand Prix. However, he has recently experienced a remarkable run of form, securing a podium finish in four of the last six races. This recent success has positioned him as a strong contender for victory this weekend.
Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris were anticipated to battle for pole position, with both drivers representing McLaren and competing closely in the championship race this season. Despite their expectations, Leclerc outperformed them, putting himself in a strong position to win the race.
On Thursday, Leclerc reflected on his recent podium finishes and his prospects for the weekend. The 27-year-old admitted: "This weekend, I'm not sure. It's by far my worst track of the season." He added: "I'm looking forward to trying to prove that wrong and to finally have a good weekend here in Budapest."
When asked about his past struggles at the Hungaroring, Leclerc said: "I don't know, I wish I knew - it just hasn't been very successful for me in the past. It's probably something with my driving style. I've got to work a little harder here compared to other tracks, but that's fine."
Comparing his difficulties at the Hungaroring to his successes at the Monaco circuit, which is often considered similar, he remarked: "Maybe it's the walls that are missing. I don't know where it's coming from, but I'm still confident we can have a great weekend. We'll see how it goes."
Leclerc's performance in qualifying was a surprise, even to himself. His Ferrari teammate, Lewis Hamilton, managed only the 12th fastest lap of the day, highlighting Leclerc's exceptional form.
Following the session, Leclerc expressed his disbelief at the events of the day: "Today I don't understand anything at Formula 1. Honestly the whole qualifying has been extremely difficult. When I say extremely difficult it's not exaggerating, it was super, super difficult. It was difficult for us to get to Q2, it was difficult for us to get to Q3. [In] Q3 the conditions changed a little bit, everything became a lot trickier and I knew I just had to do a clean lap to target third. At the end, it's pole position. I definitely did not expect that."
