Charley Hull Makes Strong Comeback in AIG Women’s Open

Charley Hull has made a remarkable move up the leaderboard at the AIG Women’s Open after an impressive third-round performance. The English golfer carded a 66, which brought her within three shots of the leader, Miyu Yamashita. This result placed her in a tie for fourth place, showing significant progress from her starting position.

Hull began the day at Royal Porthcawl on even-par, 11 shots behind the leader. However, she launched a strong charge with seven birdies and just one bogey, finishing at six-under par. This performance was enough to catapult her up the rankings and into contention for the title.

Japan’s Yamashita, who had led by three shots after a bogey-free 65 on Friday, struggled in the third round. She shot a two-over 74, which reduced her lead to just one shot. South Korea’s Kim A-lim, who posted a five-under 67, moved into outright second place, creating a tight competition at the top of the leaderboard.

Other notable performances included American Andrea Lee, who also shot a 67 and now sits in third place. Japan’s Minami Katsu delivered a standout round, with seven birdies and an eagle, though she also had two bogeys. Her 65 put her alongside Hull, American Megan Khang (68), and Rio Takeda (74) in the upper echelons of the standings.

When asked about her chances of winning on Sunday, Hull expressed confidence. She said: “Yeah, 100 per cent. I’ve got nothing to lose, have I? I hit it in the bunker on the first and made a good up and down there. Then I just made birdies when I gave myself an opportunity to make a birdie, apart from the last hole. I just kind of enjoy chasing. It’s quite fun. I like it. It’s more fun that way. I like hunting someone down.”

England’s Georgia Hall, who won the Open in 2018, also made a positive move up the leaderboard. She finished the third round with a four-under 68, tying for eighth place alongside Taiwan’s Hsu Wei-ling (69) and Switzerland’s Chiara Tamburlini (72).

Lottie Woad, making her second professional event after winning the Scottish Open last week, is just one shot behind at three under. She shot a 71, placing her in a group of players tied for 11th. Among them is England’s Mimi Rhodes, who also shot a 70.

World number one Nelly Korda had a challenging day, finishing two over par with a 74. She is currently tied in 36th place, alongside New Zealand’s defending champion Lydia Ko, who carded a 70.

The competition remains highly competitive, with several players vying for the top spot. As the final round approaches, all eyes will be on the leaders and those who are still in the hunt for victory. The excitement and tension of the tournament continue to build, promising an engaging conclusion to the AIG Women’s Open.
