A Homecoming for Matt Turner

U.S. international goalkeeper Matt Turner has made a return to the New England Revolution, joining the club on loan from Olympique Lyon until June 2026. This move comes after his transfer from Nottingham Forest to the French side. The 31-year-old keeper expressed immense excitement about returning to the club where he began his professional career in 2016. Turner’s message to fans conveyed his eagerness to be back at Gillette Stadium, in Boston, and to reconnect with supporters.

“Hey Revs fans, it's Matt Turner here,” Turner said on the club’s official social media channels. “Just want to say how excited I am to get back to Gillette Stadium, get back to Foxboro and the city of Boston, and reconnect with you all. I was obviously there a few short weeks ago, and the love I felt, the love my family felt, it was truly something special, and all that really feels like home to us.”

During his six years at the club, Turner became a fan favorite, earning recognition for his strong performances that put him in contention for the U.S. national team's starting goalkeeper position. He left the club in 2022 to join Arsenal as a backup keeper. Now, Turner is looking to regain his best form in New England.

“So we're really looking forward to getting back to the city, back to New England, and building something special," he said. "This is the jersey I wore in my debut away at the Philadelphia Union back in 2018 and it's crazy, I think seven years later all those ups and downs, I'll be coming back to Foxboro. So, like I said, it really feels like home."

Turner emphasized that the decision to return was not taken lightly. “I don't take this responsibility lightly; it's something that we've thought long and hard about, and it's the best situation for us and our family. We look forward to building something together, and you know, giving our fans something that they can be proud of in the future. So I can't wait to see you all back at Gillette. Let's go Revs.”

The Significance of the Return

Turner's return marks a significant homecoming for the goalkeeper, who spent six crucial years with New England, making 135 appearances during his initial stint with the club. After his time with the Revs, he moved to Arsenal, then Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace (on loan), and finally Lyon. This latest move should provide him with the starting minutes he has been lacking over the past two years.

What's Next for the New England Revolution?

The New England Revolution currently sit 11th in the Eastern Conference, 10 points outside the final playoff position. Their next matches include hosting D.C. United on August 9 and welcoming LAFC to Gillette Stadium on August 16. Fans are eager to see how Turner will contribute to the team's efforts in the remaining part of the season. His presence could be a key factor in helping the club climb up the standings and secure a playoff spot.
